I spent a very interesting day at Bard College of Simon’s Rock in Great Barrington, MA. This is one of the most unusual colleges I have visited. The premise behind the college is that 16 years old is the optimal age for college learning, and as such, students who would normally be entering eleventh grade at their high school, begin Early College here. These students earn an AA in two years and can remain here or transfer to another college for the final two years and will have a BA when their peers are completing their second year of college.
We also learned about their new Bard Academy for incoming ninth graders. They have two years at the Academy and then can go on to Early College.
