I believe that nothing substitutes for a firsthand visit and tour of the college.
As a professional consultant, I participate in special tours arranged by the colleges for counselors and consultants only. In addition to a comprehensive tour of the campus, I am able to interact with their admissions professionals, students and faculty. We are also able to ask questions of their student panels—this is key to understanding the student’s point of view and the “vibe” of the campus.
I have also had the pleasure of hearing many acapella groups, musical ensembles, and even learned a Kinka dance from a group of students who had recently returned from Ghana. On one tour, while present for the Open House for prospective students, I was able to hear presentations by all of the Department Deans and on another I heard seniors present their Independent Study projects. These tours are invaluable in helping me to evaluate fit.
To keep up with an ever changing environment, I tour about 25 campuses a year and have toured over 290 colleges and universities in the US.
